Paunch check-in for June 2009

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Well this is meant to be the half-way point for my 2009 New Year’s resolution. Unfortunately I still haven’t gotten back in to running. I contracted a nasty cough that lasted a couple of weeks, and then due to all the coughing I pulled a muscle which has taken another week to heal. It definitely has made me appreciate being in a healthy state more!

I’ve been a bit lucky that I haven’t put weight back on. I have been controlling what I eat quite a bit and reduced snacking. I’m still quite far off my target weight though!

Stat Amount
Weight 72.2kg
Chest 88cm
Waist 87cm
Hips 90cm
Thighs 59cm

I feel like I’m running out of time now, so hopefully this will provide added motivation. I’ve been thinking about making a proper exercise roster, so stay tuned for a post on that!

Paunch check-in for May 2009

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

I know I dropped the ball with April. I was sick for a while around the check-in time and never got around to it 🙁 Moving on to May, the most notable change is that I have stopped running, so my weight loss has effectively stopped as well.

I took this measurement in the morning before I had eaten or drunk anything, which may have skewed the results.

Stat Amount
Weight 73.2kg
Chest 90cm
Waist 87cm
Hips 89cm
Thighs 60cm

I’m now using the MyoTape to measure my circumferences, so they should be a little more consistent. Although the time of day I do it is probably a bigger factor.

Paunch check-in for March 2009

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

OK, it’s now time for the first status update since I started in earnest last month. I’m a little worried about being able to produce consistent photos, but once I get more up it shouldn’t matter too much. Here it is!

Good news everyone! I’ve lost about 1.5kg and my running isn’t taking as much of a toll on me as it used to. I also feel like I have more energy.

I’m hesitant to claim that the results are visible, because it could just be that I was sucking my stomach in a little or my distance or angle from the camera could have been off. However, my girlfriend seems to think the paunch is shrinking, so even if it hasn’t changed a bit there has been some gain 😉

New Feature Alert: Body Measurements!

I managed to grab a tailor’s tape measure and can now measure my bulging paunch and rippling hips. Behold, my stats:

Part cm
Chest 91
Waist 88
Hips 92
Thighs 61

One thing I’ve always disliked about my body is that my chest is not very broad. You can see here that its circumference actually measures less than my hips (although it’s hard to measure the chest due to how much it changes with breathing).

Stay tuned for more paunch-busting!

The beginning

Monday, February 9th, 2009

OK, so here’s some background on my health so far:

  • I’m in my mid-twenties,
  • I am 175cm tall (5’9″),
  • I currently weigh 75kg,
  • I used to enjoy playing basketball but haven’t played in years,
  • I do some casual weight lifting with a dumbbell set I have at home,
  • I try to eat reasonably healthy where possible but generally don’t like to sacrifice tastiness for low-fat boredom,
  • I have a wonderful girlfriend who cooks delicious (albeit sometimes calorie-rich) meals for me.

When I was in high school I was 65kg. Nowadays I am 10kg heavier and it shows. It would be OK if it was 10kg of muscle but it’s not 😉 I would say maybe only 2kg of it it is, at best.

These measurements place my BMI at 24.5. The healthy range is between 18.5 and 25, so I am only just below being classed as ‘overweight’.

The formula, for those playing at home, is your weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of your height (in meters). My target is to get to a BMI of 22, which means my target weights is 22 = x / 1.752 or x = 22 × 1.752 which is about 67kg.

Now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, a shot of my sexy paunch!

Yes, it’s not quite where I want it, but I do like a challenge!

I had to be careful to take this photo in a way that could be reproduced, so true progress (or lack thereof) could be seen. I straightened my back and completely relaxed my stomach. There’s no sucking in or puffing out. The photo was taken with my MacBook Pro sitting on my bed and elevated with a washing basket and a pillow. This raised the laptop camera up to about nipple high.

Stay tuned for more updates soon!
